Sarah palin galvanized conservative women by appealing to mama grizzlies, who would rise up to protect their young against the oppressive hand of the government & federal debt. Conservative women argued that they needed to get involved in politics & protect their children against reckless government spending & rising debt. More progressive women argued that gov wasn"t doing enough: to be good mothers, women must have access to paid sick days, family leave, & high-quality & affordable child care. Women have always drawn on their moral authority as mothers to galvanize & legitimate political causes. Unsuccessful battle over era reveals women are not monolithic in their political views, intense backlash among conservative men & women. Seneca falls convention passed resolutions seeking to overhaul laws & make men & women more equal socially & legally. 72-year fight for suffrage (1848-1920) reflects evolution of different types of feminism.
