Raisin in the sun act and scene summaries. Act i scene i: the younger family lives in a cramped apartment that is too small for them. They live in one of the poorer parts of south side chicago. Mama"s ten-thousand-dollar insurance check into a liquor store with him and his two friends. Because she is religious she is not interested in walter"s idea of opening up a liquor store. Ruth who is walters wife is tired from constantly working, that she also does not care about walter"s obsession with making money and opening up a liquor store. Mama tells walter that part of the check will go toward beneatha"s education in medical school. Money if the focal point in everyone"s conversation at the beginning of the play. This leads to arguments among characters and creates a mood of conflict. Walter leaves for his chauffeur"s job and travis leaves to go to school.
