Speech is more than vowel and consonant segments. Suprasegmentals encompass emphasis, loudness, emotion, and change in the rate of speech. These effects are not limited to one word but tend to affect the whole utterance. Vocal qualifier: tone of voice that conveys emotion. Vocal differentiator: vocal expression of emotion such as laugh/cry. Prosody plays a major role in typical and atypical speech and language development. Prosody develops around age 3 but continues to be refined until age 8. Abnormal prosody is associated with risk for or presence of developmental disorders.
