SLPA 3704 Chapter Notes: Subcortial Anatomy
Document Summary
Responsible for functions usually beneath the level of awareness. Many motor fibers decussate (cross over) here to other side of the body. Lesion within the cns above medulla often creates contralateral hemiparesis/hemiplegia. Lesion along spinal cord below medulla creates ipsilateral hemiparesis/hemiplegia. Each hemisphere receives information from contralateral hemisphere for processing. Vermis receives information about the body from projections through the pons. Works as an error control device to detect and correct errors in motor plans. Makes sure body movements are coordinated and free of errors. Monitors the intent of motor plans and compares them to what the body is actually doing. If there is an error, cerebellum alters the force, timing, and sequencing of muscle contractions. Walking, fine motor control for fingers, speech- called ataxia. The more rapid and precise a body movement is, the greater likelihood that an error will occur. The greater likelihood of an error, the harder that the cerebellum will work to prevent the error.
