Tbi: results of abrupt external forces acting on the skull and the brain, penetrating head injuries, skull is fractured or perforated, meninges are torn, ex. Gunshot: closed head injuries, skull and meninges remain intact, ex. Brain tumor: neoplasm, abnormal growth of cells in the brain, serves no purpose to the body, the names of brain tumors reflect the types of cells they are composed of, oligodendroglioma, tumor composed of myelin producing cells: oligodendrocytes. Neurogenic ( non traumatic: tumor, primary vs secondary tumors, surgical, primary vs secondary risks. Tumor deficits: similar to stroke, differ based on location of the tumor and degree of infiltration, can cause impaired, language, cognition, speech, swallowing, vision, hearing. Surgical trauma: damage to brain tissue that may occur during surgery to the brain, may result in acquired speech, language, cognitive, and swallowing deficits, may also cause secondary seizures, additional cvas, infections, and increased intracranial pressure.
