LING 204 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Swahili Language, Diglossia
Document Summary
Where a community makes use of 2+ language: bilingualism. Where an individual speaks 2+ languages: bilingualism without diglossia. Someone speaks 2+ languages, but not the community. Ex: westerns community speaks english / no diglossia. Us, austrailia, england: disglossia without bilingualism. Ex: places in la where they only speak spanish. But this area in la people only speak spanish. Often government is done in one language. Countryside speaks different language than government one. Especially small communities: neither disglossia nor bilingualism. Pretty much always at least some other languages present. That isolate from english in the united states and have own language and only one. Isolated communities where no one was allowed in or no one could physically get into the community. Rare in our world today because we are so interconnected. Perhaps just a few high governmental officials who are bilingual but most of the country speaks korean and only korean: disglossia and bilingualism.
