Those not treated with lithium were 13 times more likely to commit or attempt suicide than those treated with lithium: ssris may also reduce risk because they reduce depressive symptoms and regulate levels of serotonin. May actually increase risk in children and adolescents: dialectical behavioral therapy was developed to treat people with borderline disorder- who frequently attempt suicide. Therapy focuses on managing negative emotions and controlling impulsive behaviors. Aims to increase problem solving skills and skill at managing negative emotions: suicide hotlines and crisis intervention centers provide help to suicidal people in times of grated needs. In addition many prevention programs aim to educate entire communities about suicide. Broad based prevention or education programs do not tend to be very helpful and may actually do more harm.
