Document Summary

Module 9: developmental issues, prenatal development, and the newborn. Developmental psychology -> examines physical, cognitive, and social development across the lifespan. Genes predispose both our shared humanity and our individual differences. Differences initiated by our nature may be amplified by our nurture. Not purely nature or nurture, the interaction between biological, psychological, and sociocultural forces form us. Compared with the person-to-person differences within groups, the differences between groups are small. Those who emphasize experience tend to think of development as a slow, continuous shaping process. Those who emphasize biology tend to think of development as a sequence of genetically predisposed stages (fast or slow everyone passes through the stages in the same order) Reflects an individualistic worldview and emphasizes thinking over feeling and acting. Some research casts doubt that life proceeds through neatly defined stages, however, the stage theories contribute developmental perspective on the whole lifespan. Stability establishes our identity and change gives hope for a brighter future.
