Information taken from janson"s history of art 8th edition. Greek architecture, sculpture, and painting are often considered the ancestors of western. The greeks were among the first of civilizations to write about their artists at length. Greeks refined their ideals about their city-states. Began to govern them (misc: monarchy, aristocracy, tyranny, and oligarchy) Except even in 462 bce women had no civic role and slavery was in practice. After centuries of worshiping in open-air sanctuaries, the greeks began to build temples around their religious altars. The entrance of the temple faced east. The altar stood to the east of the (towards the rising sun) temple. Their purpose: to house the cult image of the god to whom the temple was dedicated. In the 7th century bce the temples began to be made out of stone rather than wood. Corinthian style didn"t develop until late 5th century bce.
