3/15/18: individuals may differ from each other to some extent because they belong to different cultural groups, members of some groups may differ from each other in distinctive ways. Traditionally defined in terms of ethnicity, nationality, and language. Enculturation = process in which a person picks up the culture into which he/she is born. Acculturation = process in which a person who moves from one country to another may gradually pick up the culture of his/her new home. Genetics are not the primary basis of cross-cultural differences. Cross-cultural psychology = research that compares different cultures. Culture refers to psychological attributes of groups, including customs, habits, beliefs, and values that shape emotions, behaviors, and life patterns. Experience-near constructs = aspects of psychology that question whether or not people from different cultures think about concepts the same, such as feel the same emotions, desire the same goals, and organize their thoughts in a similar way.
