The art of theatre chapter 1 notes. There are four major topics to help determine what art can be considered as: human creation, structure, structure can vary. There can be a beginning, middle, and an end, or none at all: medium & subject, reaction. The word art springs from the same root as the word artificial. Art is not the real thing but rather a human creative endeavor that involves the perceptions and imagination of an artist who is trying to say something in his or her own particular way. Art involves subject and medium: spatial arts, architecture, sculpture, pictorial arts, painting, line and color in two dimensions. Literary arts: poetry, novels and short stories, performing arts, performed by a person. Spatial arts consists of sculpture and architecture manipulating material in space. Statues, buildings, etc. fall into this category (the statue of liberty or the eiffel tower, for example).
