TOPIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES
5.1 List the four types of cells found in the body
• Epithelial cells
• Connective tissue cells
• Muscle cells
• Nerve cells
5.2 Recognise under the microscope the differences in structure of the four cell types found
in the body
5.3 Describe the general function of epithelial cells
• Epithelial cells:
o Forms a barrier between the body and its environment AND lining body
compartments
o Usually tightly joined with little extracellular matrix
o Cells have polarity, basal surface, apical surface and lateral surface
o Can be in a single layer (simple epithelial cell)
• When diffusion through the cell is important
• When the cells secrete or absorb molecules
o Cells can be in multiple layers (stratified epithelial cells)
• When protection of underlying tissues is important
o Classification:
• Shape of surface cells/ height:
▪ Squamous (flat)
▪ Cuboidal (square)
▪ Columnar (tall)
• Number of cell layers:
▪ Between the surface and the basement membrane (simple [1],
stratified [2+])
