Document Summary

A simple endocrine reflex using a parathyroid hormone. The stimulus for parathyroid hormone secretion is low plasma calcium concentration, this stimulus then causes cells of the parathyroid gland to secrete parathyroid hormone, which then travels in the circulation to its target tissues - the bone and kidney. Synergism - when two or more hormones interact at their targets so that the combination yields a result that is greater than additive. Example shown - blood glucose concentrations over time and it"s dependent on hormones that are present. Cortisol, glucagon and epinephrine all in the circulation and when they"re in the circulation alone, it shows the concentration of blood glucose. If we look at the effect of glucagon and epinephrine together - the combination of glucagon and epinephrine raises blood glucose to a higher level than the additions of each individual hormone synergism.
