Hbs204 week 9 cell signalling and gi system. The communication of information - the communication can be between different cells or between the extracellular and intracellular space. Cells need to respond to a variety of stimuli and need to know what each other are doing. Cell signalling enable cells to respond and adapt to extracellular environment and co-ordinate function. Intercellular signalling the signalling between different cells important for coordinating function and responses between many cells release first messengers (e. g. hormones, neurotransmitters), one cell talking to another. Intracellular signalling - the signalling within a cell it converts extracellular signals into intracellular response - relies on signalling molecules - second messengers. Intracellular signalling lipid soluble molecules (e. g. steroid hormone) They transmit the extracellular signal into an intracellular response by diffusing through the cell or plasma membrane and. They then bind to a receptor in either the cytosol or the nucleus and produce a response by altering gene transcription.
