BIOL10004 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Flagellin, Accessory Pigment, Extremophile
Document Summary
* the first inhabitants on earth were prokaryotes (single celled organisms) * prokaryotes are believed to have arisen 4 billion years ago, but the first evidence dates back 3. 5 billion years. * cyanobacteria contained chlorophyll a & that pigment allowed the organisms to take light energy from the sun and use carbon dioxide and water to produce glucose. They were the first organisms to do this. * ea(cid:396)l(cid:455) i(cid:374) the ea(cid:396)th"s histo(cid:396)(cid:455), the at(cid:373)osphe(cid:396)e a(cid:374)d o(cid:272)ea(cid:374)s had zero oxygen, high carbon dioxide, ammonia, methane and intense radiation. * photosynthetic cyanobacteria changed all of that as they were the first organisms to release oxygen. After around 2 billion years of constantly releasing oxygen, it began to build up in the atmosphere which had a huge impact on the atmosphere as the ozone layer was created. It was created by uv light which split the oxygen in the atmosphere into ozone which formed the protective ozone layer.
