Document Summary
Lecture 8: conceptualizing learning disabilities and other exceptionalities. Conceptualizing exceptionalities every child possesses a unique combination of abilities and problems, interests and fears, successes and failures (winzer, p. 4) Children come with many gifts and offer us many lessons. When you put limits on someone, it limits their outcomes of life. In canadian society, special education is based on ideas about normative and non-normative development. Educators are taught to expect variation in their students. To expect a pattern of strengths and weaknesses that is reflective of individual differences. However some learning styles/process fall outside this range of normal expectations. Those students who fall outside the normal range are seen to need special education. There is an area of research that focuses on the study of exceptionality. Within that area one approach is disability studies. Addresses exceptionality in its social and political settings.
