Discovery screen a mutant screen to identify those genes and gene products that are involved in establishing body pattern of complex multicellular animal & how that early pattern is established. Want to find the functions involved in establishing a pattern of an animal in embryonic development. Focus on skin of first instar larva because it has a beautiful stereotypic (reproducible) pattern easy to identify mutants that are altered in the pattern. Did mutant screen looking through mutagenized chromosomes for those genes that generate a phenotype that specifically are affected that pattern. Once you get a mutant with a phenotype you can work back to the function.
