Document Summary

Cerebral hemispheres - two specialized halves connected by the corpus collosum. Left hemisphere: verbal processing- language, speech, reading, writing. Right hemisphere: nonverbal processing- spatial, musical, visual recognition. Involved in mental abilities such as goal setting, judgement, planning, and impulse control. Receives sensory input heat, touch cold, balance and body movement. Millions of myelinated axons connecting the brain"s hemispheres. Provides a pathway for communication between the hemispheres. If surgically severed for treatment of epilepsy, hemispheres cannot communicate directly. Lateralization = relatively greater location of a function in one hemisphere. Right hemisphere - mental imagery, artistic ability, spatial relationships. The anatomical structure and functional organization are more plastic or malleable than widely assumed. Our brain has an ability to change structure and function. Parts of brain enlarged (einstein-wider parietal lobe) Damage to one part leads to neural reorganization. Prepares the body for short-term, high level muscular activity required to protect itself. Allows the body to rest, replenish energy reserves and repair itself.
