Document Summary
Largest brain structure- contains most neurons and synapses. Last structure to stop growing- most extended period of development. Sensitive to environmental factors for longer than other areas b/c it is the last structure to stop growing. Temporal lobe: memory, visual recognition, emotional processing, auditory processing. Parietal lobe: spatial processing, integrates sensory input w/ memory. Frontal lobe: organization of behavior, planning developmental patterns. Lateralization: hemispheres are specialized for diff modes of processing/functioning. Left: sensory info, control of right side of body, verbal abilities, positive emotion, sequential, analytical processing. Right: sensory info, control of left side of body, spatial ability, integrative processing, negative emotion cortex and handedness. Adult weight of brain is 3 lbs the developing brain. Experience-expectant brain growth: experiences available in expected/shared environments- universal experiences- experiences that the brain expects, i. e. hearing language, touching objects, social interactions- those pathways are waiting for stimulation to be strengthened.
