At the time, there was a rise in science and a knowledge of germs that let people know there are germs we cannot see. People started worrying much more and there was a new cleanliness to the bourgeoisie. Degas, woman ironing, 1873: although there was a new cleanliness, the poor could be identi ed by the way in which they curve their bodies doing work. Manet, cafe concert 1878 i. ii: his clothes are over the top and out of time, he was a sort of dandy iv. there is a waitress in the background, identi able by her apron. Monet, impression sunrise 1872: wanted to paint in a different way but not all impressionists were crazy rebels they wanted to be recognized similarity in the sensation produced by the setting. Renoir nude in sunlight i. critics saw this as disgusting because the skin was painted with purples and greens showing veins and giving her a rotting look.
