Document Summary
Lecture 28 - rain forest livelihoods in amazonia: myths and realities. Rain forest peoples : partners in conservation/redd. Economic life in rain forest : limited understanding. Folk people (populous), people we turn to when we ask how we can find alternate development plans that are not so destructive benefit people without cutting all the forest down. Colonists afraid of the forest and cut it down. Rainforest people considered to be partners in conservation (red initiatives) living in the forest and know it well, seen as partners. We know very little about the people who live in the forest and who are from the forests; we only know about the colonists. Two groups: amerindians and folk (metis) peoples. Traditional agricultural and forest harvesting practices but sell produce in markets (use low-input technologies; produce for subsistence and for market) Poor in income and assets /day, 6-7000 usd/year, non-land assets=500usd. Amazonia: an environmental diversity - pictures: very diverse in resources, and everything.
