PSYC 212 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Principles Of Grouping, Outline Of Object Recognition, Color Vision
Document Summary
Structuralism: dots make lines lines make corners corners make shapes shapes are connected to one another and make objects. But there are examples where the grouping of lines into objects becomes unclear. Gestalt grouping rules were one way to explain this. Perception involves which interpretation of the external reality is more likely supported by gestalt rules [perceptual committees] Pandemonium model of perception: demons represent neurons, each level is like a brain area. Committees (groups of demons) must integrate conflicting opinions and reach a consensus. Put together what goes together eg. continuity, similarity, etc. Honour physics; must agree with laws of physics. Occlusion helps us interpret the solid arrow on the shapes. You pick one or the other eg. image that is both the duck and the rabbit you can perceive one or the other and switch in between, but not both at the same time. Seperate what should be separated eg. figure vs ground.
