Painted to look like a star filled sky, walls are telling a story. It was a religious space that was part of a secular dwelling. Model of chapel to virgin mary = form of penance for scrovegni family business. Scrovegni must have feared that the way he made his money would haunt him after death. Giotto designed paintings for interior of this painting. Narrative = story told in individual scenes. Lowest register is painted in shades of grey , presenting opposing virturtues. Patrons had a lot of say in their work. The artist was not allowed to choose his own design. Avarice = excessive desire to gain material. Wanted scenes to look real, wanted viewer to feel involved in scenes. Giotto wanted people to be able to relate to what they were seeing. Giotto used important techniques to give 3 dimensional space. Overlapping = placing one figure in front of another so that not all bodies are visible.
