Task complexity and structure: traditional material simplicity often best, awareness of psychological effects, cultural considerations, environments/setting of session. High complexity structure: directive provided, ex. create a mask showing what you present to the world on the outside and your inner self on the inside. Low complexity structure: spontaneous, paint/draw whatever you want, what comes to mind. Crafts: part of cultures throughout the world, visual art - made with the intention to stimulate thoughts and emotions and often contains decorative in nature, overlap can occur, neuroscience providing info about art making and the brain (cerebellum) Media used in at, pt, and expressive therapies: cross over domains, art becomes play - toys, props created, play, drama, music, storytelling, dance, mask making, puppet making, all catalysts for self-expression. Judy weiser (1999, 2010) phototherapy: not mutually exclusive fields - can tap into different responses from clients in treatment, viewer projects a unique meaning onto a photograph.
