Document Summary

Bio2b03- module 5: protein processing & trafficking in the rer. Experiments that reveal trajectory of proteins leaving rer. Membranes of er constantly changing shape & structure, undergoing fusion, & fission & migrating to new locations in cell. Note: resolution of electron microscope allows researchers to se individual ribosome complexes. Rough er so called because of rough appearance attributable to ribosomes that dot its surface. Site of co-translational transport, protein modification, & formation of vesicles that will transport proteins from er to golgi apparatus. Carbohydrate metabolism & calcium sequestration occur here (latter to regulate calcium concentration in cytosol) Examples include: glycosylation, formation of disulfide bonds, protein folding, & proteolytic cleavage. Modifications to proteins targeted to er lumen can occur along entire length of protein protein. Modifications to proteins embedded in er membrane will only occur on luminal portion of protein. Glycosylation- addition of polysaccharide/sugar group to a protein. Common on proteins secreted from cell & proteins embedded in cell membrane.
