Poets of the time were scholars; engaged in skilled competitions. Alexandria became the center of greek culture. Museum in alexandria (mousaion)- center of worship for 9 muses, research institute. Library of alexandria- part of mousaion burns down with most of greek literature. Suggest that poets were still writing epic poetry 400 years after homer. Was at odds with apollonius- publicly criticized apollonius to the extent where he left. Later returned to alexandria to replace callimachus. Jason and the argonauts on the argo on a quest for the golden fleece. The wicked stepmother intent on killing the children- only way to overcome famine is to sacrifice his son. Her husband about to sacrifice a son. Golden ram appears, carries the son away to colchis.
