Cultural centre of the greek speaking world in hellenistic period: 323 bce -30 ce. Library: an important part of the mouseion. Poets of the time were scholars; engaged in skilled competition. Preferred to keep it shorter, more succinct, original. Advocated a different kind of artificial style which is short, self aware, and polished. Very little of his work exists today. One of the hardest forms of greek poetry to read. According to callimachus, epic is dull and used up. Apollo visits him, yet he does not actually guide him. He simply confirms that callimachus has the right idea. Jason and the argonauts on the argo on a quest for the golden fleece. The wicked stepmother intent on killing the children. Tells her husband that the only way to stop a plague in his kingdom is to sacrifice his son (her stepson) Her husband about to sacrifice a son. A golden ram appears, carries the son away to colchis.
