Oral tradition (e. g. greek epic poetry) allows for flexibility, adaptability, and stability: stories can be retold but can also be reshaped can change a lyric of a song. They can be more adaptable in their story making. (change/new stories would make way into the culture very slowly) Characteristics of oral communication: radical (conversation): can accomplish or disrupt. With conversation, can make a decision like a family meeting. Disruption more than one person talking, the way they are talking can be the inclusion of others, things can be changed when multiple enter into the conversation: conservative (chants): consolidation and affirmation of community. Songs can be changed but they don"t get changed often a performer changing their song lyrics in concert. Development of written language and laws allowed the roman empire to expand its power and territory. When the roman empire collapsed the development of local written languages lead to the development of european nation states: post roman empire.
