CMST 3K03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder, Sigmund Freud, Theodor W. Adorno
Document Summary
Compare mass culture to psychoanalysis: mass culture is like psychoanalysis in reverse, psychoanalysis was the innovation/framework introduced by sigmund freud. Crux of freuds argument was the assertion that human beings are governed/controlled by forces outside of our consciousness. Freud is credited for discovering the notion of the unconscious . Controlled by unconscious desires and impulses (usually sexual in nature) Freud"s nephew, became one of the key gures behind the advent of modern pr and advertising. Applied his uncle"s ideas about the nature of the human psyche in order to develop ways to control and manipulate masses using mass media technologies. Until apple introduced the ipad there was no desire for purchasing tablets. Suggests the manipulative aspect of the culture industry that adorno suggests is identi ed here, in the way advertisers prey upon public desire/anxiety/interest/concern/ fear to get people to purchase product. Many kinds of advertising almost never sell the product alone (after all lots of competing products are indistinguishable)
