ENVIRSC 1A03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Jet Stream, Cold Front, Polar Front
Document Summary
Converging inspiring air rises and condenses, there are tropical cyclones and the other cyclones. Cold front overtakes and squeezes the warm front. Well developed fronts circulating in a deep low pressure center describe this stage. Cold air can be found on both sides of the front. Cold air at high latitudes, greater in pressure. We see pockets of high and low pressure. Jet streams are always going to be adaption this wavelength pattern: end of cyclones life cycle. Vorticity: changes in jet steam create ridges and troughs which intensify redistribution of cold and warm air, as faster moving air in ridge moves towards slower moving air in the trough, air piles up and converges. Distribution of ridges and troughs as a wave like pattern. 500 hpa map of northern hemishphere from a polar perspective show 5 long waves circulating the globe. Dash line show position of long wave troughs: vorticity, rotation of air, absolute, relative, earth, positive vorticity.
