Mental disorders are characterized by their effect on: how a person is thinking, how a person is behaving, how a person is feeling. A spiritual problem (possession, problematic relationship with god) A balance problem (yin/yang, bodily humours: chemical unbalances within the body are causes of mental illness. A personal problem (moral failing, problems in living) A social problem (poverty, naomi wolf: mental illness are consequences of poverty, naomi wolf believed that high anorexia rates were the cause of social pressures on beauty and physical appearance. Mental illness is just a biological disease like any other, with viruses, lesions, and genetics causing malfunctions within the brain. Has symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment: focuses on the individual. Agree that it biological but disagree on the causes.
