To a lot of people it looks like (hands on head. Violence, unpredictable, uncontrollable and will do bad things to people. People sexuality used to be seen as a mental illness. Mental illness is seen through the eye of the beholder. Mental disorders are characterized by their effect on: thought, behavior, mood. Mental vs. physical: symptoms are expressed (mental= thoughts ) Some disorders only affect one of these elements, others are felt impacted. Oldest= spiritual problem (problematic relastionship with god(s)) A balance problem (yin/yang, bodily humours) dominant is now a chemical. Somatic problem (ibn sina [physical problems in the brain], psychopharmaceuticals) Personal problem (more failing, problems in living) Problem of consciousness (psychoanalysis) be aware of internal conflicts. Each ways of thinking are drastically different from each other. The medical model: mental illness is just like any other physical illness its biological. Viruses, lesions, and genetics causing malfunctions in the brain: has symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments.
