Lecture one : how do we define mental health and illness. Various ways we look at mental illness: oversimplified way (google, crazy way (movies & tv, celebrities (young women , demi, lindsay) Homosexuality was believed to be a mental illness until 1980. This means: what we define as being mentally ill is not a fixed set of truths, there is no universal correct definitions, categories and symptoms change according to time and place. Mentally illness is not just about your brain its about society and its values. Ways we look at mental health: conductivity, community, women exercising, belonging (google) People"s health in relation to these three things. Mental disorder characterized by: mood, behaviour, thought. Ways of thinking about mental illness: a spiritual problem, understood as problem related to things like faith. Doing so because of possession of devil or because they"ve displeased god/s. still has salience today: as a balance problem, some imagined balance being disturbed.
