Immunology: study of multi-layered host defense system that protects us. Four classes of pathogens (extracellular vs intracellular: bacteria: salmonella, tb, etc, viruses: influenza, hiv, etc, fungi: candida albicans, e. floccosum, etc, parasites: protozoa, worms, etc, vaccines. Immune system doesn"t know that the virus is inactivated. Immune response is generated to destroy the inactivated virus: when the patient then gets the real virus, the body will know how to fight it off, cheapest way to reduce disease, 3 levels of immunity. Fixed/constant (doesn"t get better at its job: no memory, the innate immune system reacts quickly when it recognizes a foreign cell in the body. Because of its fast response to potentially dangerous cells (i. e. infectious), the innate immune system is non-specific.
