The gulf between those who do and do not have ready access to computers, the internet, and the media. The digital divide was originally determined by access alone. We need to think about the digital divide in a global context. The growing digital culture is becoming more of a platform based approach. Technologies are built to fail; cell phones are not made to last for ten years. They are made like this due to consumption so we have to keep buying newer models. Designing for the dump allows companies to maximize profits by driving consumption of new products while making previous products obsolete quickly and externalize costs to workers and the environment. Millions of tonnes of e- waste is produced each year and often poisons those who have to deal with it. Puts the burden of disposing products back onto the producer and manufacturer.
