Assumed to operate in a fast, efficient and obligatory manner. Controlled processes- guide attention voluntarily and consciously to objects of interest. Controlled processes operate more slowly because they are assumed to require more cognitive effort: e. g. while driving, you use flexible control processes to choose what to do. It is difficulty to consciously attend to many aspects of the task-environment at the same time because the resources for controlled processes are limited. Salient: a salient piece of information is one that appears to naturally pop-out at you. (e. g. emergency vehicle: police car, etc. catches your attention whether you intend to or not) Difficult tasks can be learned through practice. They can go from controlled to automatic processes.
