PSYCH 2AA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Jean Piaget, Cognitive Development, Object Permanence
Document Summary
Theoretical perspective: constructivist knowledge is not made. Need balance between what they know and experience. Don"t want answers handed to them but figure it out: maturationist. Various stages we have to go through to mature. Intelligence is an adaptive, basic life function: goal is cognitive equilibrium. Kids are active, motivated learners: discomfort is caused by cognitive disequilibrium, they will discover when they need to, usually in disequilibrium, equilibrium relieves discomfort. Kids construct their own knowledge: but within the confines of what they already know. Schemes: cognition develops through refinement, organized patterns of thought and action, help interpret experiences, help adapt to world around us. Cognitive development is development of increasingly complex schemes: understand more of world around us. How do kids construct and modify their schemes: adaptation, organization. Process by which children try to interpret new experiences by incorporating them into existing schemes.
