PSYCH 3CD3 Lecture 9: Intergroup Relations Lec 9
Document Summary
Theories of prejudice: realistic conflict, social identity, and relative deprivation. Groups feel as though they are in competition for some material good (e. g. money or power) or non-material good (e. g. self-esteem) An emotional reaction to some group and its members (usually negative) Emotional evaluation of another group (emotion and attitude) Connection to stereotyping: stereotypes justify negative feelings toward an outgroup. Learned stereotype leads to decision of hate. Knee-jerk negative reaction to a group member can be justified by stereotype. Connection to discrimination: biased behaviours against people we don"t like. If you are discriminating against an outgroup member, you decide that you are doing it because you hate them: e. g. Nazis torturing jews led to the decision of hatred. Realistic group conflict: if two groups that hate one another find they need one another to achieve a common goal, their negative outlooks on one another turn positive. South africa needed to get themselves back into the global field.
