Document Summary
Sociol 1z03 lecture 7 social inequality cont. As economies begin to develop social inequalities will rise, and then, at a certain stage of development industrial inequality will decline. Gini coefficient: measures inequalities in a society: 0: no inequality, 1: perfect inequality. There"s a lot of inequality, and then it drops off. Individuals are responsible for negative conditions they live in: ex. If you blame the victim, then the state doesn"t need to help: seeing poverty as beyond individual controls, result of external social forces, e. g. Systemic discrimination: some groups in society are more disadvantaged than others, just based. Social position is determined by personal skills, abilities. As wealth is accumulated in fewer hands, elites solidify control of resources at the exclusion fo the poor. No social wealth is accumulated by elite, who exclude lower classes. Less important than how existing class influences interactions. Chart can also be found in textbook. It instills a desire to fill certain social positions.
