Document Summary

Left realism: marxist theory, critical theory or critical legal studies, postmodernist theory, critical race theory, peace-making criminology. Society is pluralistic, not homogenous: society is basically people coming together and deciding what is acceptable and what isn"t, conflict theories disagree. They see diversity, but potential conflicts between individuals whose interest are not the same, different races, cultures, political points of views. It"s heterogenous: power is unequally distributed among groups, dominant groups use their power to create deviance as a tool to protect their interests and keep. Those with power are in control the powerless down: how exactly, by criminalizing the activities of the powerless. Laws against crimes of the oppressed: e. g. robbery, loitering, vandalism, strikes, etc: relatively few laws against crimes of the powerful: e. g. producing defective products, unsafe working conditions, poor wages, environmental pollution, etc, by applying laws unfairly. Differences: group in conflict, marxist theories --> social class (rich/poor, critical --> race, gender, sexuality language, culture etc.
