Social constructionism and medicalization soc of dev nov 20-21. Labeling theorists interested in: how labels get applied, consequences. Social constructionists interested in: where labels come from in the first place, how they acquire the meanings they do (good/bad; deviant/non-deviant; moral/immoral, how these meanings change. Definitional shifts: how do they happen? (definitional shifts are not always successful) They are always a group coming together and wanting to change something/behaviour and start campaigns and they can be successful or not. Who: who are the claims-makers: social actors . Ind or groups coming together to make claims about wanting to change something. How do they frame their claims: what are they saying about this behaviour, ex: child abuse people said children are not property, they are human being with the right to life like anyone else has. They are not lesser b/c they are children. Case study the battle over cigarettes markle and troyer.
