Due to focus on social change, by the 1970s, most sociologist moved beyond structural functionalism, and moved towards ideas such as neo-marxism or feminism, etc. , It is now largely just historical significance we do not usually use it any more. Neo- functionalism, functionalism did go into decline, there was a re-emergence in the 1980s, 1980"s was a conservative decade and that helps to understand why there was a resurgence in functionalism. This new functionalism was a perspective that tried to build on structural functionalism while overcoming its major deficiencies. Neo functionalism went out of favour and today very few sociologist prescribe to any functionalist perspective.
