Women recognized as persons under the law, but not yet equal: sexism and feminism. Sex: doctors define sex mostly based on genital size; sometimes they include the kinds of chromosomes, genetics, and hormones present. Categories the medical field have created that separate out people. Gender: term used to speak about our sense of self as male/ female/ trans/ gender non confirming and how we understand ourselves relating to social norms. Gender is socially constructed, not innate characteristic. We express and confirm gender all the time. Social construction that men> women, and that there are only two genders. Our society thinks doctors can tell you if you are a boy or girl. We tend to think that we are either male or female, and that they exist on a very opposite binary from another. Social work says it operates on a continuum. There are lots of different ways to express gender.
