Document Summary

Any behaviour that departs from accepted practices in a society or group. There is criminal as well as non-criminal forms of deviance. We label those who stray from normative behaviour as deviant. It is maintained through social interactions and the legal system. To fix deviance we need to interact with deviations from the norm differently. Social strain and social control influence deviant behaviour. To fix deviance, we need large scale changes. We need to change the peer group, removing bad influences in order to avoid delinquent behaviour. Societies divide deviance into more or less serious forms, representing violations of mores and folkways and taboos. Mores are widely held beliefs in society, with many so widely held they are formalized into law. Folkways are rules of behaviour and custom passes down through a group. Deviance is a necessary part of the symbolic interaction process of negotiating social reality.
