SOCY 273 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Thomas Theorem, Gender Identity, Collective Behavior
Document Summary
The causation is outside, focus is human society. Studies, socialization, conflict b/w groups, and social networks. Three major perspectives: symbolic interactionist: how people negotiate the meaning of social life through their interactions between others. Society is a network of interactions b/w individuals. Individuals have agency (the ability to think and act w/o restraints) Interaction is the way we come to all knowledge. Society exists in a complex series of relationships; we negotiate these internally and externally. Meanings arise via social interaction among individuals. The social construction of reality results from the process by which we use symbols and language to give meaning and value to objects and people. People use meanings they derive from interaction to guide their own behaviours telling us how to feel think or act. Change in behaviour is motivated by the maintenance of order or to get what we want out of a situation. People may come away from an interaction with different interpretations of it.
