Identify factors that contribute to common errors in the measurement of blood pressure and pulse: verbally report and document subjective and objective data. General survey: study of the whole person, covering the general health state and any obvious physical characteristics. Gives gestalt (overall condition) of the pt. Call pt, how do they approach, how does handshake feel. Consider four areas physical appearance, body structure, mobility and behaviour. Stature: ht. within normal range/age & gen. heritage. Symmetry: body parts equally bilateral and relative propn. Centripetal (truncal) obesity, fat conc in face,n eck, trunk w/thin extremities (cushing synd) Rigid spine and neck, move as one unit (arthritis) Stiff, tense, ready to spring from chair, fidgety mvmts. Tripod: leaning forward with arms braced on chair arms, occurs w/chronic pulmonary disease.
