Even if an organism has unlimited food, it cannot eat forever. The photosynthetic response curve (see in class notes for diagrams) Where the graph levels off is the max rate of photosynthesis - pmax. The lcp (light compensation point) is the point at which photosynthesis=respiration, when the light is lower than the lcp, the plant will respirate (lose sugar), when the light level is above the. Plants can be categorized as either sun (open) or shade species. Shade plants have a lower pmax and damage more easily. However, in low light conditions, shade plants have a faster rate of photosynthesis than open plants (see in class diagram). There are trade offs, while open plants can do more photosynthesis than shade plants, they also have a higher lcp, meaning they do more respiration than shade plants.
