Document Summary

Psych 105: individual and social behaviour (11th january 2019): lecture 3. Continuation of research design: experiments (continuation) Except the independent variable, all other variables must be kept constant in an experiment. Animals/ humans observed in an experiment are called subjects". Many psychologists do not like to call humans subjects as they actively participate in the experiment. Two types of experimental design*: within subject design each subject is exposed to different levels of independent variable. Example: clever hans as only one subject was available for research: between subject design each subject is exposed to a single level of independent variable. Choosing subjects is tricky random assignment* is the most favoured method. Random assignment: subjects chosen by chance alone, which excludes the possibility that subjects will differ from each other in a significant way. Self- selection participant determines which treatment group they want to belong to.
