Numerical ie education in years and income in dollars: categorical variables. Non numerical ie religion: correlation the relationship between two variables. Flat line no correlation at all: scatterplots play an important role when exploring the relationship b/w two quantitative variables. They allow us to identify problem cases, the form of the relationship (whether it is linear or not) and have a preliminary estimate of the strength of the relationship. It does not tell us the slope of the line. Hence we need to use the line of best fit to help us see if it correlates. 2: what do you do with outliers something unusual in the correlations and in quantitative analysis. If it is part of the data, keep it but it will be unusual. We infer a causal relationship based on understanding of the temporal relationship b/w the variables. Which occurs first in time ie education before income: variable classification.
