Either it is an external force or the witch (female herself) when it comes to a devious act such as gossip. A person is possessed and they want to get the demon out of the person by performing exorcism. Deformed children, disease etc. thus they must be a witch. Reason for negative things happening: disabilities, job loss etc. Seizures were seen as a sign of witchcraft. Metaphor for those who commit deviant acts as they are possessed by an evil spirit.
